Enriching Christian worship through music and the arts

Sunday 4 November 2018

St Edmudsbury Cathedral

In collaboration wiith St Edmunsbury Cathedral

A major event to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Crimson Glory uses music, drama, dance and image to tell the story of a Suffolk soldier in the war. The story itself is fictional, but the characters are based on real people. We follow the story beginning with life on a Suffolk farm, then hearing Kitchener's call, the voyage to France, and the horrors of the trenches. Through these stages we see the soldier grappling with issues of Christian faith in the midst of conflict - questions just as relevant today as they were 100 years ago.

The production will involve not only the Cantus Firmus Choir, but the St Edmundsbury Cathedral Choir, the Ex Silentio choir from King Edward VI School, sixth form drama and dance students, and around 200 children from 14 primary schools, as well as an inter-school art exhibition. An exciting project that will be Cantus Firmus's most ambitious event to date.

We plan to hold choir Regional Rehearsals for the choir in Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich. Singers are encouraged to attend all five Regional Rehearsals, plus three Joint Rehearsals in Stowmarket. A minimum attendance at six rehearsals will be required.

The music

The music is wide-ranging. We'll be singing four movements from Rutter's Requiem, one movement from Vaughan William's Dona Nobis Pacem, arrangements of some First World War music hall songs, and one or two new compositions written specially for Crimson Glory.

The cost

A production of this scale has many costs involved. We are requesting a minimum donation from each choir member of £26, to cover the rehearsals plus hire of music. (If you are able to donate a larger amount, this will be gratefully received in order to help us meet the unusually high budget, but there is no pressure to do so).

If you haven't sung with Cantus Firmus before...

... there will be short informal audition after the first

rehearsal that you attend. This is quite painless - you'll be asked to sing a short section of a song of your choice, and to demonstrate your vocal range.
